Oil of Oregano and Rosacea
Rosacea is a skin condition characterized by redness of the skin and pimples on the cheeks, forehead, nose and
chin. It is a chronic inflammation that appears now and again. This skin problem is sometimes called adult acne,
because it usually manifests at around the age of 30. But it can also afflict teenagers and those in their early
Although it has some similarities with acne, it is a different skin condition. It is a problem that affects the
entire blood vessel network of the face. In some serious cases, it causes soreness of the eyes, across the eyelids
and around the eyes.
This skin problem starts when the blood veins in the face become distended. This results in blushing or redness
of the face because the entire veins are inflamed. The catalysts are varied, and these include anxiety, sunshine,
spicy food, humid and hot weather, taking a bath in very hot water, wines, etc.
Cause of Rosacea
Scientists have not yet determined the exact cause of this skin
condition. They suspect that rosacea is triggered by elements in the environment, such as bacteria, pollutants, the
sun, etc. and the individual’s genetic makeup. Mood swings are also suspected to be one of the causes. People with
fair skin and those who blush easily are more prone to this skin problem
Usual Treatment for Rosacea
Rosacea is usually treated by giving antibiotics to the patient.
The first treatment is by applying creams and other facial preparations. They are immediately applied to the
affected skin area to treat the inflammation and stop the condition from becoming chronic.
To treat the redness and the spots, the medical provider usually prescribes antibacterial lotions and tablets.
Stronger antibiotics are resorted to when the condition does not improve. In serious cases, surgery is carried
out to give the skin a better appearance. Some of the surgical procedures include derma abrasion, laser
treatments and cryosurgery.
Even with all of these rosacea treatments, there are some medical authorities who are resigned to the fact that
there is no complete cure for this skin condition. However, there are also medical practitioners who are testifying
about the effectiveness of oil of oregano in treating this skin problem.
Oil of Oregano – A Better Alternative
Dr. James Meschino, Director of the RenaiSante
Institute of Integrative Medicine, Toronto, Canada, is a doctor who uses oil of oregano to treat rosacea. He
has only positive words about the effectiveness of this essential oil in treating this skin problem. Dr. Meschino
who holds a masters degree in nutrition said “The only thing that I do, which is remarkably successful, is to give
those clients with rosacea a supplement containing oil of oregano and have them use an oil of oregano topical
lotion at night.” He was referring to his patients afflicted with rosacea.
Dr. Meschino added: “This essential oil contains volatile oils which kill a large variety of microorganisms. It
also seems to knock out the skin mite which has been associated with rosacea.” His patients who were treated by
using oil of oregano have seen an 80 to 90 per cent improvement in their skin condition.
The Nature of Oil of Oregano
There are already many medical studies done on this essential
oil which proved its effectiveness in killing harmful microbes and strengthening the immune system. It has also
been found to control inflammation and reduce pain.
Since the cause of rosacea is hard to determine, oil of oregano can be used to control and stop its growth
because it can kill all kinds of harmful microbes, be they bacteria, fungi, parasites or viruses. It also contains
significant amounts of nutrients that can help strengthen the immune system. The effectiveness of oregano oil
against rosacea was already proven by Dr. James Meschino and others.
The Powerful Components of Oil of Oregano
Oil of oregano is extracted from the crushed
leaves of the wild oregano plant, Origanum vulgare, that is indigenous to the mountain regions of Mediterranean
countries such as Greece, Turkey and Portugal. The extreme weather conditions and the rich soil minerals in these
places are believed to be the reasons why this wild plant contains many potent substances. Only the wild oregano
plant can survive these inhospitable conditions.
The ancient Greeks used the wild plant for food and medicine. They used the plant to treat common
ailments like colds, flu, skin problems, digestive disorders, etc. These days, it is the essential oil extracted
from the leaves of the plant that is being sold as oil of oregano.
The chemical analysis of this essential oil shows that its antimicrobial properties are due to its carvacrol and
thymol content. These two phenols are its main active ingredients and these two acts synergistically to kill
harmful germs. This essential oil contains about 79% carvacrol and about 6% thymol.
There are also other phytochemicals and flavinoids contained in this essential oil. They are caryophyllene,
bisabolene, pinene, borneol, linalyl acetate, cymene, linalool, geranyl acetate, myrcene and trepinene.
Its mineral content includes potassium, magnesium, boron, copper, iron, manganese, calcium and zinc. The vitamin
content of oregano oil includes vitamins A (beta-carotene), C and D.
These chemical compounds combine together to form a very powerful antibacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-fungal and
anti-viral agent. And this fact has been proven by many studies and experiments done by several universities in the
United States, including Georgetown University.
Oil of Oregano – An Effective Treatment for Rosacea
There is no reason to doubt that oregano
oil can be effectively used in treating patients afflicted with rosacea. This is due to the following reasons:
• This essential oil is an effective anti-inflammatory agent and pain killer. An article published by
Phytotherapy Research described how this essential oil was able to surpass anti-inflammatory drugs in reducing
inflammation and pain.
• Oregano oil is also an effective antioxidant. A 2003 study on medicinal herbs was published by the
American Society for Nutritional Sciences Journal of Nutrition. The study showed that oregano oil has powerful
antioxidant properties. That means oil of oregano can protect your cells from damage caused by free
• Unlike antibiotic treatments and medical procedures, oil of oregano does not leave any side effects. It
is safe to use even for children over 7 years old, because it is an all natural substance.
How Oregano Oil Can Be Used to Treat Rosacea
The method of treatment used by Dr. James
Meschino will give us a clue. He gave his patients 250 mg oregano capsules twice a day. He also applied the topical
cream at night and not during the day.
He also advised his patients to eat foods like yogurt, since there is a possibility that oregano oil may kill
the friendly bacteria in the intestines. Yogurt will replenish these friendly bacteria.
